Don't
miss the first annual Gainesville Environmental
Film & Arts Festival
March 19-28, 2010: TEN DAYS of the best environmental feature films and documentaries, culminating in an outdoor Environmental Fair with music, art, entertainment, food, Eco-information booths and a free family film on March 27 and ecotours of our region's natural resources on March 28.
The Festival is a not-for-profit event organized by The Hippodrome Theatre and www.GoGreenNation.org to raise awareness of environmental issues in our North Florida region and to inspire our community to address environmental issues through lifestyle adjustments, business and the arts. This festival will engage the community through school-related programs; community conservation projects; green business education; film, music, dance, poetry, photography and visual art exhibitions; and community non-profit organization involvements.
The Festival will bring thousands of movie, arts
and nature lovers to downtown Gainesville to see
outstanding environmental films and art, learn
about environmental and social justice issues,
explore our natural treasures, connect with those
working to protect them and create a more sustainable
community.

This month's featured outfitter
Adventure Outpost
Adventure Outpost is an outfitter and guide service
located in High Springs, Florida. In addition to
selling and renting kayaks, canoes and outdoor
gear, they offer a wide variety of river trips.
On their home river, the Santa Fe, they offer rentals
and shuttle service every day of the week except
Tuesdays. At the heart of Adventure Outpost is
their guided tour program.
Every week they lead
3 - 4 tours on waterways across North Florida.
Their "Launch Menu" includes a variety of rivers,
lakes and coastal environments, giving a full representation
of North Florida's rich diversity of habitats.
This includes cypress swamps, hardwood swamps,
river hardwood forests, darkwater rivers, marshes
and, of course, lots of crystal clear, artesian
springs. They also offer coastal trips - especially
along the Gulf Coast.
Their tours also cover a wide range of themes. Hard-core
adventurers who like it rough, will want to check
out the "x-stream" explorations, on which they
go into the wildest, most inhospitable terrain
in North Florida. On these excursions, they invite
customers to "experience the thrill of going where
no one in their right mind has gone before." Those
who prefer a more relaxed and comfortable excursion,
can choose from an assortment of themes - history
paddles, birding tours, wildlife watching, spring
hops, swamp excursions, coastal paddling, island
hopping along the Gulf coast, and wild lore and
edible plant tours. During winter, their most popular
tours are manatee encounters. Most guided trips
are led by Lars Andersen, a Florida naturalist
and author, (Paines Prairie: Pineapple Press, Sarasota
FL. 2001; - and - North Florida Adventure: A Journey
Through History [audio tape], Grinnin' Lizard Productions,
Dallas, Tx. 1988). His most recent project, the
Paddlers Guide to the Suwannee River Wilderness
Trail was published spring of 2009 For descriptions
of our trips and a calendar of tour dates, visit
their website.

Spring
Paddle Florida deadline: March 5 |
Get out of the cold and get outdoors on Florida's most beautiful rivers!
Our third annual Spring Paddle Florida will be held March 18-25, 2010 on the Withlacoochee and Suwannee Rivers. Unlike in years past, we will begin the trip at Madison Blue Spring State Park on the Withlacoochee River. After paddling 12 miles on the wondrous Withlacoochee, and traversing some great 'fast' water, we spend the night at Suwannee River State Park near the confuence of both rivers. We will then paddle for 6 more days until we reach Manatee Springs State Park; 115 miles in all. Deadline for registration is March 5th.
Both the Suwannee and Withlacoochee Rivers are high and flowing beautifully. For all Paddle Florida veteran's, you know that means we will not be paddling as much as 'steering' our way down the river!

Paddle Florida in February:
Rally
for the Rivers/Palatka
Springs Rally/Tallahassee
On February 13-14 Paddle Florida staff attended the Rally for the Rivers in Palatka in order to take part in the festivities surrounding the efforts by the Putnam County Environmental Council. Held each year, the Rally seeks to draw attention to the politics of water in our region. Specifically, the opposition to plans by the St. Johns Water Management District to withdraw millions of gallons of water daily, from the St. Johns and Ocklawaha Rivers for development in central Florida. The other issue yet to be resolved, is the matter of the Rodman Dam, which prevents the Ocklawaha from flowing naturally. Special thanks to Brack Barker of Wild Florida Adventures for assisting with the paddling workshop at the Rodman Dam on Valentine's Day.

On February 16, we traveled to Tallhassee in order to take part in the Springs Rally. Springs advocates from across Florida converged on the Capitol courtyard to call on the Florida Legislature to pass meaningful springs protection legislation this year. For the last five years, legislation reining in nutrient pollution of these special places has failed to pass, in large part because of opposition stemming from the economic concerns of the regulated community. In response, speakers at the Rally made a very articulate case for the cost of inaction: the overgrowth of algae, the decline of species dependent upon these special places, the loss of our natural heritage, and the decline of the aquifer that feeds both springs and the drinking water upon which our communities depend. Senator Lee Constantine (R-Altamonte Springs, and chair of the Senate Select Committee on Florida's Inland Waters) has signaled his intention to introduce legislation in the coming weeks to improve the condition of Florida's springs. A House sponsor for companion legislation has not yet emerged.
