DEP is in the process of updating BMAPs, the State’s plans to reduce nitrates and restore springs to health, by July 2025. Throughout May, DEP hosted several online meetings focused on BMAP updates, Nitrogen Source Inventory Loading Tool (NSILT) results and spring vent analysis for each BMAP. During our livestream on June 20, FSC Executive Director Ryan Smart and FSC Board Member Bob Palmer will be sharing their analysis of the BMAP updates and how things have changed since the BMAPs were first drafted.

During DEP’s meetings, we learned that the Department has not accomplished its own water quality goals and is instead resetting its goals, which will continue to delay springs restoration. We will discuss the Department’s goals and more during our live discussion.

Above the surface of the water, springs are home to many of the most recognizable mammals in Florida. Some, like deer and otters, can be found at the springs year-round. Silver Springs and the Silver River are even the year-around home to several tribes of rhesus macaque monkeys. In the winter the springs, which maintain a constant water temperature of about 70 degrees, provide a warm-water refuge for species like the Manatee. Meet the furry residents of springs!
