Janice Hindson

Janice Hindson is Paddle Florida’s Executive Director. She lives in St. Augustine, Florida and was born and raised near Manchester, England. Her love of the water began while volunteering with her mother for the Royal National Lifeboats. After moving to the states at age eleven, she eventually served in the U.S. Coast Guard, doing search and rescue missions, mostly in the Great Lakes region. She is an ACA Level 3: Coastal Kayaking Instructor and enjoys multi-day self-contained kayak and paddleboard expeditions. Mostly on FL’s rivers and coastal areas, and sometimes around the world. With her BSBA and MBA in hand, she spent 30 years coaching and assisting businesses. Including working with non-profits to create strategic plans and raise forgivable debt. She is also a certified support group facilitator and co-chairs the NAMI Family Support Group. Janice has served on various boards including NHS and is the Board Chair of Florida Society for Ethical Eco-tourism.


Guerry Bradley, Gear Transport Manager, whose day job is as a firefighter/EMT in St. Augustine, has been a part of the Paddle Florida family since our first trip in March, 2008. Since that time, Guerry has volunteered for many trips and is known as a key player around the campfire each night, as his jokes entertain the rest of the group. Guerry is an excellent craftsman and is known for the beautiful raised planters he builds. He also leads SUP and kayak trips around North Florida. Guerry as been a featured speaker on several media outlets as “Vegan Firefighter”.


John Courtright, Gear Transport Manager, grew up in Miami. A great place to ignite his love of the water, he spent lots of time surfing the coast. November 2009 he retired from Miami Dade Fire Rescue after serving 30 yers as a paramedic/firefighter. Retirement gave John the ability to pursue many outdoor passions. Living on the gulf coast in Naples, kayaking became a must do activity. He can be found paddling with local clubs, camping in the 10.000 islands or exploring northern rivers. In addition to paddling, John has become invloved in several environmentally focused organizations.; South Florida Panther Wildlife Refuge, CREW Land and Water Trust, and most recently Florida Paddling Trails Association as a trail angel.


Tom McLaulin, Gear Transport Manager, is a founding member of the Florida Paddling Trails Association and serves as their Blueway Coordinator. Tom spent his career in logistics and enjoys paddling, fishing and other water activities.


Jodi Eller, Operations Specialist / Trip Leader, grew up along the Indian River Lagoon in Merritt Island, Florida. A wildlife and trails enthusiast, she has backpacked the Appalachian Trail, Camino Primitivo, and Camino Finisterre. She has paddled the Florida Circumnavigational Saltwater Paddling Trail becoming the eleventh person to complete it. She has also bicycled the Northern Tier across North America. She earned her master’s degree in Environmental Education from the Florida Institute of Technology, is a self-published author, and has worked as an outdoor, formal, and informal educator for over 10 years. She lives in the “Oldest City, St. Augustine, and spends her spare time caring for animals as the local pet sitter and kayaking in her backyard saltmarsh.

Shirley Kasser Creech, Operations Specialist / Trip Leader, grew up playing in the creeks and bayous of rural Mississippi. Her love of wilderness and water is deeply embedded in her soul.  When she moved to Florida many years ago, she became fascinated with the ecology and geology of the amazing wild places of Florida.  Shirley volunteers her time to trail maintenance for the FNST, as well as leading many hikes and paddles. Any day in the woods or on the water is a good day, and being able to help others enjoy and love our beautiful wild places is better than ice cream!  For her “day job”, Shirley uses her Bachelor's degree in Computer Information Systems from the University of West Florida to support data collection and analysis of fisheries stocks in the Gulf of Mexico. Her spare time is spent taking grandchildren on wild adventures, highlighted by mud, bug bites, and squeals of joy.

Debra Akin,, Paddle Florida’s Board of Directors Treasurer

Debra Akin was born and raised in south Florida and started kayaking in the mountains of North Carolina under the dubious tutelage of an older brother. After surviving two summers of his combat whitewater kayaking, she enrolled in the University of Florida and started exploring the calm, peaceful waters and springs of north Florida. And basically never left. With a couple of graduate degrees in Entomology, Microbiology and Epidemiology under her belt, Deb works in UF’s College of Medicine in the area of drug discovery and cancer research. During the summer months, she guides Chicago teenagers in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area for the non-profits Big City Mountaineers and Chicago Voyagers. She's a Master Naturalist, Wilderness First Responder and Treasurer of the Florida Paddling Trails Association. Other interests include weaving, canoe racing, and building wood kayaks.



Beth Courtright, Paddle Florida’s Board of Directors President

Beth grew up in Massachusetts and moved to Florida after completing a BA in Psychology and an AD in Nursing. She opted to retire at the same time as her husband, so that they could spend time together. A love of the outdoors started when she was a Girl Scout. Always ready for camping, kayaking, & exploring, it was recommended by a kayaking friend that she take a PaddleFlorida trip. Since her first trip on the Ochlocknee river she was hooked. Along with her husband, she volunteers for many worthy environmental organizations, including: Panther Wildlife Refuge, CREW Land and Water Trust, and Florida Paddling Trails Association.



Farley Doucette

Farley Doucette was born and raised in Florida, Farley is a Coastal Master Naturalist, ACA Day Trip Leader, avid SCUBA diver, kayaker, and traveler. After 30 years as an educator in the Northeast, he returned to Florida to continue his love of being in, on, or under the water. Farley has worked as a consultant for Outward Bound, Project Adventure, as well as the federal government. In 2003, he was the recipient of the Red Cross Hero Award. As a volunteer for Paddle Florida, Farley is passionate about the need to protect the natural environment.


Stephen Holland, Paddle Florida’s Board of Directors Vice-President

is an Emeritus Professor in the Department of Tourism, Recreation, and Sports Management at the University of Florida, where he taught for 30 years. For six years he served on the Natural North Florida Tourism Task Force; planning and promoting rural tourism in 16 North Florida counties. He is past president and current board member for Florida Defenders of the Environment. His academic interests include park management and rural tourism development, eco-tourism, and water-based recreation and he has published over 55 journal articles on these topics. He worked as a Park Ranger for the National Park Service in 3 national park areas. He has led six international courses on ecotourism and sustainable development; two in Australia and four in New Zealand, which included water-based activities. He also led week-long courses at Great Smoky Mountain National Park and Land-between-the-Lakes National Forest for 17 years. He lives and boats on a lake in North Florida and also kayaks in the Adirondacks of New York state.



Brenda Wells

Brenda Wells lives in Gainesville and is the Communications Director for the Florida Springs Council. Her background is in environmental education and communications, which includes writing and delivering conservation training programs for Disney's Animal Kingdom, acting as Camp Sea World's Operations Manager, and producing a springs fish field guide with the Florida Springs Institute.
